Bomber Brawl Lives Up To Name At Southern Raceway

Southern Raceway: Milton, FL – June 12, 2010

It was a hot night at Southern Raceway, but the racing action was even hotter! The second race in a six race Bud Lite Bomber Brawl series sure lived up to the Brawl name, with Donald Hardy take the victory with a last lap move to the point. Branden Harris, after a stint in Open-Wheel Modifieds, returned to victory in the Street Stock division while Aaron Buscavage claimed his first Vintage win. Other feature winners included Frank Wilson in Late Models, Don Livingston in Open-Wheel Modifieds, Dean Shaw in Hobby, April Ray in Stingers.

Greg Burton led the way for the Bomber Brawl main event with William Arnett on his outside. With the drop of the green flag it was Arnett out to the lead but Burton battled back. Out of four to complete lap one it was Burton out front once more. Turn two saw Arnett run outside again to take the point back while Terry Mayhair runs at the third spot. Caution flew on lap three when Matt Chavers got into the front straight wall after a tangle with another car. Arnett remains the leader with Burton second, Mayhair third, Donald Hardy fourth and Billy Fletcher fifth. Back under green contact between several cars stacked up the leaders as Mayhair got into Arnett. Arnett turned, collecting Mayhair and a host of others. Burton emerged as the leader with Al Hardy third and JR Benton third. Back under green, after a lengthy caution to clear the mess in turn four, it was Burton out front as Benton moves to second over Hardy. Caution flew again on lap five when Matt Chavers got sideways out of two and Ronnie Blanton, with no place to go, got into him. Chavers came to rest high. Burton remains the leader for the restart with Benton second and Hardy still holding onto third. Burton held the point under green again until Fletcher went around in four and caution flew again, killing the lap. Burton again led Benton back to green with Hardy in third. The next attempt ended in caution when Bobby Smith turned Blanton around in three, then spun himself. Smith was blackflagged for rough driving. Burton again brought the field to green with Hardy second and Arnett back up in third. Burton continues to lead as Donald Hardy moves into second and Will Goulet into third. Caution flew when A. Hardy turned Arnett. Burton leads D. Hardy back to green with Goulet at third. Under green again it was Burton followed by D. Hardy as Chavers picks up third. The battle for position is between Goulet and Benton for fourth with Benton emerging at fourth. Caution waved on lap thirteen when A. Hardy came to a stop high in turn three. Burton again brought the field back to green, but it is short lived when Arnett dove into one, getting into Benton. Both spun low and caution flew again. Burton again brought the field back to green for the second lap thirteen restart with D. Hardy second and Chavers third. Fletcher runs fourth with Goulet at fifth. Back under green again it was Hardy taking the lead while Burton and Chavers battle for second with Chavers taking the position. Caution waved again on lap sixteen when Burton turned it around in three. D. Hardy remains the leader with Chavers second and Fletcher at third. D. Hardy continues to lead Chavers as Fletcher and Goulet battle door to door for third with Fletcher taking the position. Caution waved on lap twenty with the front six remaining on the speedway for the six-lap shootout. A complete invert was drawn with Blanton on the pole, A. Hardy second, Arnett third, Fletchaer fourth, Chavers fifth and D. Hardy sixth. Back under green for the shootout to the checkers it was A. Hardy to the lead as Chavers and Arnett pulled to second and third before caution flew when A. Hardy spun in four. Without a lap completed it is a complete restart. Again A. Hardy led the way to green, holding the point as Fletcher runs outside into second. Fletcher gets loose in two, passing the second spot off to D. Hardy while Chavers moves to third. The battle for the lead ends with A. Hardy going around in four to the white flag. D. Hardy takes the win over Chavers at second and Blanton third.

David Windham brought the Street Stock field to green with Branden Harris outside in second. With green in the air it was Harris into the lead while Windham and Bo Slay battle for second with Slay taking the spot. Caution flew on lap one when Billy Shaw and Larry Faulk tangle in turn two. Harris brought the field back to green, holding onto the spot until caution flew when John Wood went around and over the infield wall out of turn four. Harris again brought the field to green, still holding the lead as Slay takes up in second and Mile Lane third. Lap six saw Lane drop back as Raymond Ray and Ryan Fowler moved to third and fourth. Caution waved on lap seven when Tyler Blakely went around in four. Harris leads back to green with Slay second and Ray third. Harris remains at the point while Slay moves to challenge. Fowler advances to third over Ray. Slay’s challenge is not successful and at halfway slips back into the second spot. Caution waved on lap tweleve when Josh Livingston got into Joe Richbough with Richbourg spinning in one. Harris leads back to green with Slay second, Fowler third, Ray fourth and Preston Porter fifth. Porter takes over third on the start while Slay and Harris battle over the lead. Fowler runs fourth with Ray at fifth. Caution waved on lap sixteen when Joe went Joey Moxley went around in turn four. Harris brought the field back to green again with Slay at second and Fowler Still in third. Harris took the win over Slay while Fowler faltered on the back straight as Bo Bailey moved to take the third spot.

Aaron Buscavage led the Vintage field to their feature green with Kylan Nathey on the outside front row at second. With the drop of the green flag it was a tangle on the front straight with Bill Blum in the air and tagging the front straight wall. The call went for paramedics however, there were none available at the speedway as the ambulance had left on a call unannounced. After a few minutes Blum emerged from the car with an injured shoulder. Blum declined the ambulance, I heard (unverified) and was transported to the ER by his wife. When racing resumed it was Buscavage taking the lead over Jerry Venable with John Cody at third. Lap three saw Venable take the lead while Cody followed to third. By Lap seven Chris Bayhi had climbed to fourth from a tail end start. Lap thirteen saw Bayhi move into third before caution flew for Nathey spinning in turn two. Venable brought the field back to green with Cody second and Bayhi at third. Caution waved again when Jerry Bohlman spun in two. Under caution Venable headed to the pits passing the point to Cody. Buscavage runs second with Bayhi third. Bayhi looks inside Cody and on lap fifteen takes the lead. Cody runs second while Nathey has moved to challenge Buscavage for third. Caution flew at lap eighteen when Cody got into Bayhi and both went around in turn three. Buscavage now holds the lead for a two lap run with Nathey second and Gary Hirman third. Buscavage holds the point as Nathey pulls to second and Bayhi third. Buscavage claimed the victory with Nathey second and Bayhi third.

David Windham showed the way to the start for the Hobby feature with Dean Shaw on the outside of the front row. With green flying it was Windham to the lead until Kevin Jernigan dove hard into one, taking three other cars with him as he turned around. The field lined up for a complete restart with Windham bringing them back to green taking the lead for a moment until Shaw pulled past out of two for the lead. Dale Bush runs third with Windham at second. Caution waved on lap five when David Smith spun on he back straight. Shaw continues to lead Windham . Into turn one Windham got into Shaw, turning him around and caution waved. Bush runs at the point with Fowler second and Haynes third. Bush holds onto the lead for a couple laps until Fowler moves to the point. Bush falls into the hands of Shaw and the succumbs to the challenge with Shaw moving to second. Windham then moves past Bush into third as the race reaches halfway. To the white flag Shaw takes the lead as Windham and Fowler get together in four with Fowler turning up the track. Shaw takes the win with Windham second and Bush third.

Don Livingston brought the Open-Wheel Modifieds to green with Greg Hopkins on his outside. When the green flag waved it was Livingston taking the point over Hopkins as Ryan Fowler moved past John Melton into third. Caution waved when Hopkins spun from second in turn two. Livingston leads Fowler with Melton at third. Caution flew at lap two. Livingston brought the field back to green with Fowler second and Melton third. Livingston continues to lead until Brandon Kilpatrick and Lance Wasson got together in one. Livingston leads Fowler with Melton third, Nathan Ingersoll fourth and Joe Phillips fifth. The next attempt for a restart ended in yellow again when several cars went around in two. Fowler headed to the pits under caution moving Melton to second and Ingersoll third. Livingston leads Melton as Justin Galbreath moves to third. Caution flew again on lap four when Kilpatrick spun up onto the dirt mound in turn two. Back under green Livingston retained the lead while Melton runs at second with Hopkins third. Caution flew on lap five when JD Rutherford spun in turn one. Hopkins moves to second on the restart with Melton at third. Caution waved on lap twelve when Kilpatrick went around to the infield off the back straight. Livingston brought the field back for a green white checker run to the finish. Livingston led to the win with Hopkins second. Phillips edged into third with one to go to finish in that spot.

Frank Wilson led the $1000-to-win Late Model feature to green with James Ussery outside at second. Under green it was Wilson to the point with Ussery second and Cody Smith third. Caution flew on lap two when Smith spun in two. Wilson again brought the field to green with Ussery second and Steven Jernigan at third. Randy Polk runs fourth with Roger Pack fifth. Back under green it was Wilson out front again until Smith and John Melton got hooked together on the back straight and caution flew. Again the field came to the second lap two restart, and again caution flew when Martin Lilland spun on the back straight after contact with another car. Wilson brought the field back to the third lap two attempt, holding onto the point with Ussery second. Jernigan moved to third as lap three began. Caution waved on lap six when Polk went around on the back straight. Wilson brought the field back to green again with Ussery second and Jernigan at third. Wilson led to the victory with Ussery second and Jernigan third.

The Stinger division closed out the nights racing program with Jose Ojeda Jr leading the way and John Upshaw on the outside front row. With green in the air it was Ojeda out front with Upshaw in hot pursuit. At the line it was Upshaw taking over the lead with Bob Tarrant looking inside Ojeda for second. Lap two saw Tarrant take over second. Lap four saw April Ray inside Ojeda for third as Jeff Ladue was looking on Ojeda’s outside. Caution flew on lap eight when Lloyd Gray went for a loop on the front straight. Upshaw brought the field back to green, while Ray pull to second over Tarrant, then challenges for the lead shuffling Upshaw to second. Robert Garrett moved to third at lap ten, then to second on lap eleven as Ray remains out in the lead. With the laps winding down Garrett has the pressure turned up on Ray for the lead but Ray is unyielding. Ray claimed the win over Garrett as Russell Estain 3rd moves past Upshaw to third at the line.

In Southern Raceway’s first ever Media Race it was Brent Lane of Cat Country 98.1 taking the win.

Next Saturday will be Southern Raceway’s Racer’s Swap Meet beginning at 8am and running through 1pm. If it is car related you can bring it to the swap meet, it is not limited to just racing stuff. Then, racing for the night will get underway at 7pm. On the scheduleare all regular classes with a $1000-to-win feature for the Vintage class and the third visit of the season for the Northwest Florida Modified Compact Trucks.

June 26 will see regular weekly point racing plus the third of six Miller Lite Six Pack Street Stock Shootout races. And mark your calendars because you’ll certainly not want to miss the Mid Season Championships and Annual Fireworks Blast on July 3rd. One of the absolute best aerial fireworks displays in the panhandle area is right here at Southern Raceway!
